This project builds on the results achieved in the first phase of the Promotion of State Accountability for Prevention of and Response to election-related violence in Kenya implemented through an Open Society Initiative for Eastern Africa (OSIEA) grant.
The project’s overall goal is to improve the respect, protection, and fulfillment of human rights in Kenya, especially during election periods, and aid in supporting the conduct of elections which are fair and free from all forms of violence, especially SGBV, thereby upholding the rule of law and overall, safeguarding democracy in Kenya.
The project’s objectives focus on pursuing state accountability for implementation of its human rights obligations to effectively prevent the recurrence of election-related violence in Kenya, especially SGBV, and ensure the existence of an effective framework for response in the lead up to, during and following the 2022 General Election, and future electoral periods.
More particularly, the project is aimed at ensuring that the Kenyan state establishes effective measures for protection of vulnerable communities, timely investigations and prosecution of responsible actors, and provision of health care services, psychosocial support, and reparation to affected victims, in accordance with established human rights principles and standards.
