Christine Alai is an accomplished human rights lawyer with over 13 years’ experience focused on the advancement of equality, non-discrimination and access to justice for gross human rights violations. Alai has dedicated her career to promoting the protection of women and girls from sexual, gender-based and reproductive health violations, especially in conflict and post-conflict situations.
She has proven expertise in program management, research, strategic litigation, technical assistance and capacity development with state and non-state actors, legal and policy analysis, building alliances and partnerships, and strategic advocacy. She is an author and co-author of several articles and publications on transitional justice, survivor-centered prevention, accountability and reparation for conflict-related sexual and gender-based violations.
Alai has provided leadership in conceptualizing and strategically growing the vision and programs of reputable national and international human rights organizations including Physicians for Human Rights – Program on Sexual Violence in Conflict Situations; International Center for Transitional Justice-Kenya; Kenya Human Rights Commission; and Kenya National Commission on Human Rights.
Alai holds a Master of Laws Degree (LL.M.) in International Legal Studies from Georgetown University and a Bachelor of Laws Degree (LL.B.) from the University of Nairobi. She is also a Member of the Steering Committee, Geneva Center for Education and Research in Humanitarian Action (CERAH), thematic course on Sexual Violence in Conflict and Emergencies; founding Trustee and first Chairperson of the Board of Directors, East African Center for Human Rights; and Chairperson of the Board of Directors, Universal Periodic Review-Info, Africa Regional Office.
