In our pursuit of justice for survivors of sexual violence, UTU WETU engages in Strategic Impact Litigation to hold perpetrators and duty-bearers accountable. One significant facet of this endeavor is our involvement in cases related to conflict-related sexual violence and other forms of gender-based violence. For instance, Petition 122 stands as a landmark effort to seek accountability for the atrocities committed during the 2007 post-election violence in Kenya. The case pertains to holding the state accountable for the sexual violence inflicted upon survivors during the post-election period of 2007. pic.twitter.com/7lOc7huNtN — UtuWetu (@utu_wetu) November 17, 2023 Through this litigation, we aim to compel the Kenyan government to fulfill its obligations in preventing, investigating, and prosecuting sexual violence crimes, as well as providing reparations to survivors. Despite the challenges and delays, our perseverance has yielded victories, such as the High Court ruling in favor of survivors in December 2020. However, our work is far from over, as evidenced by ongoing appeals and efforts to ensure that justice is served comprehensively. By leveraging the legal system as a tool for social change, we strive to advance the rights and dignity of survivors while promoting accountability and ending impunity for perpetrators of sexual violence.

OUR WORK, RESEARCH AND INVESTIGATION

UTU WETU undertakes projects to deepen our understanding of gender dynamics and public health emergencies. One notable project is a grant focusing on gender and public health emergencies. In this initiative, we seek to document the experiences and resilience of survivors of sexual violence, particularly during crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Through storytelling and artistic expression, we aim to shed light on the challenges faced by survivors, highlight their resistance and resilience, and advocate for their rights to justice and accountability. Additionally, partnerships with organizations like WomanKind on Policy Briefs further enrich our research efforts, enabling us to generate evidence-based insights that inform policy development and advocacy strategies. By combining research with advocacy, we strive to catalyze positive change and improve outcomes for survivors of sexual violence in the context of public health emergencies.

MOVEMENT BUILDING, OUR WORK

At UTU WETU, we believe in the power of collective action to bring about meaningful change. In our Movement Building initiative, we forge partnerships with various organizations nationwide, united in our mission to combat sexual violence. Collaborating with entities such as Grace Agenda, CSO Network in Kisumu, Coalition against Sexual Violence (CASV), and Transitional Justice Network, we leverage collective resources, expertise, and networks to drive our agenda forward. These partnerships enable us to amplify our voices, reach broader audiences, and advocate more effectively for policies and actions aimed at ending sexual violence in our communities. By fostering alliances with like-minded organizations, we strengthen the foundation of our movement and enhance our capacity to create lasting impact.
